Wernicke-Korsakoff disease

• Rare (?) disorder 10-50 cases per million

• Vitamin B1 deficiency as a primary cause

• Alcohol may contribute but need not

• Severe amnesia: both anterograde and retrograde (real cause largely unknown)

• Retrograde amnesia clearly illustrated by the autobiography of prof. P.Z. (written 2 years before onset)
