Notes:
Today I would like to clarify two models that in quite complementary ways relate the phenomenon of Consciousness to Quantum Physics. Let me stress that in the brain all molecular processes have a quantum mechanical origin. For instance sor John Eccles proposed that the phenomenon of electron tunneling (a particle overcoming an energy wall which is larger than its own energy by tunneling through it) might play a role in synaptic transmission of signals.
That is not the topic of today. We take those processes for granted and for all practical purposes (that is on the level of the brain) they can be approximated by classical chemistry and classical electrodynamics.
What we will discuss are models that on one hand attribute a status to consciousness outside of classical physics and other hand use the more transcendental aspects of quantum physics.
As Bohr already expressed, talking about quantum physics is a dangerous act. And there is an enormous danger that one reduces the arguments to the level of: Consciousness is difficult to understand and Quantum Physics is difficult to understand so they must be related.
The models i discuss are highly speculative and almost certainly not true. However it is my personal belief that possibly they point into new directions to be explored.
